Verify an Idaho Nurse—or Find the Correct Birthday Renewal Date
Idaho nursing renewal is unusually easy to misunderstand in 2026. The Board is moving existing licenses away from the old fixed August 31 cycle and assigning birthday-based expiration dates that can extend into 2028, 2029, 2030 or 2031.
This guide helps employers verify current authority and helps nurses choose the correct portal action, understand the transition chart, check an application, submit fingerprints, arrange endorsement verification and avoid paying for the wrong transaction.
Use DOPL Public Search for a live public record. Use DOPL Online Services for your own renewal, application, uploads and status. Use Nursys for interstate nursing verification and compact monitoring.
Verify a license
Check an Idaho RN, LPN, APRN, temporary or medication-assistant record.
Check portal status
See whether fingerprints, transcripts, verification or other items remain incomplete.
Renew a nursing license
Confirm the assigned birthday expiration and pay the exact portal-calculated amount.
Endorsement or compact
Arrange official verification, transcripts, fingerprints and Idaho-residency proof.
Verify or renew a CNA
Idaho CNA certificates are handled by Health and Welfare, not the Board of Nursing portal.
The old August 31 schedule no longer tells the whole story
Idaho began transitioning Board of Nursing licenses to two-year birthday expirations on April 1, 2026. The public record and personal portal now matter more than an old fee table or previous license card.
Do not renew from an old August 31 assumption. Search your live license first. The 2026 transition can assign a birthday expiration in 2028, 2029 or 2030 depending on birth year and whether the birthday falls before August 31.
Public verification is available online
Employers and members of the public can search DOPL records without signing into the licensee’s private account.
Birthday now controls transitioned expiration
Existing licensees are phased into the new system based on birth year and the birthday’s position relative to August 31.
No one-year renewal option
DOPL states that transitioned licensees receive at least two years and no longer select a single-year renewal.
APRN renewal has extra conditions
APRNs must maintain Idaho RN authority, current recognized national certification and acceptable peer-review participation.
CNA uses a separate registry
Idaho Health and Welfare manages CNA verification and renewal through the Nurse Aide Registry.
The Board communicates electronically
Keep the portal email current and consider Nursys e-Notify for license-status and expiration alerts.
Some DOPL pages and the current rule table still display legacy August 31 dates. For a transitioned license, use the live public record, personal portal and nursing-specific 2026 transition notice.
How to verify an Idaho RN, LPN or APRN license
Start with Idaho DOPL Public Search. Use the live record to confirm the exact credential, current status and expiration before relying on a nurse for employment, staffing or independent practice.
Open the official DOPL Public Search
A paper card, résumé, screenshot or commercial directory can be outdated.
Open Idaho Public SearchSearch by license number when available
Otherwise use the current legal name and retry with a former surname if the nurse recently changed names.
Match the correct credential
Confirm whether the record is RN, LPN, APRN, temporary nursing authority, virtual telehealth or Medication Assistant–Certified.
Read status and expiration together
A matching name does not prove current authority. Confirm that the displayed status and expiration support the intended work.
Check compact or advanced-practice authority separately
An APRN can have separate RN and APRN records. Interstate practice may also require confirmation through Nursys.
Record the live verification
Employers should retain the source, license number, status, expiration, credential type and date checked.
| Record item | What it answers | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| License type | Whether the record is RN, LPN, APRN, temporary or another nursing-related credential. | Match it to the duties the person will perform. |
| Status | Shows the current status recorded by DOPL. | Do not treat an expired, lapsed or inactive record as active authority. |
| Expiration date | Shows the live expiration assigned to the credential. | Use this date instead of the legacy August 31 schedule. |
| RN and APRN records | Shows whether underlying RN authority and advanced-practice licensure are current. | Verify both when the person will perform APRN functions. |
| Compact status | Helps determine whether multistate RN or LPN authority may apply. | Confirm primary state of residence through Nursys where needed. |
No matching record?
Find the new Idaho birthday-based expiration date
Beginning April 1, 2026, existing nursing licenses are being moved from fixed August 31 expirations to two-year birthday-based expirations. Every transitioned licensee receives at least two years.
License being renewed in 2026
| Birth year | Birthday timing | Assigned expiration | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Even birth year | Birthday before August 31. | Birthday in 2030. | Confirm the exact date and fee inside the portal. |
| Even birth year | Birthday on or after August 31. | Birthday in 2028. | Renew during the portal window and save confirmation. |
| Odd birth year | Birthday before August 31. | Birthday in 2029. | Use the live portal amount rather than calculating manually. |
| Odd birth year | Birthday on or after August 31. | Birthday in 2029. | Verify the displayed expiration after renewal. |
License issued before implementation and expiring in 2027
| Birth year | Birthday timing | Assigned expiration |
|---|---|---|
| Even birth year | Before August 31. | Birthday in 2030. |
| Even birth year | On or after August 31. | Birthday in 2030. |
| Odd birth year | Before August 31. | Birthday in 2031. |
| Odd birth year | On or after August 31. | Birthday in 2029. |
New applicants: DOPL states that a newly issued nursing license will be valid for at least two years and expire on the licensee’s birthday. The applicant’s birth year is not used to shorten the initial period.
Fee calculation: DOPL says licensees are charged only for whole years during the transition. Because the assigned period can exceed two calendar years, do not manually multiply the old fee. The checkout total is the amount to review.
These license types are excluded from the birthday-transition chart: one-time short-term RN or LPN, Virtual Telehealth Nurse, Nurse Apprentice, LPN temporary, RN temporary and APRN temporary licenses.
Renew an Idaho nursing license through DOPL Online Services
The birthday-transition notice says a nursing license can generally be renewed up to 60 days before its assigned expiration. Start by checking the public record and private portal rather than waiting for a paper reminder.
Check the live expiration date
Confirm whether the license has already moved to a birthday expiration and note the exact year.
Check Current RecordWait for the correct renewal window
DOPL says early renewal remains available up to 60 days before the birthday expiration unless a credential-specific instruction states otherwise.
Sign in to the established account
Use the DOPL Online Services account already associated with the license. Recover access instead of creating a duplicate profile.
Open DOPL Online ServicesReview contact details and attestations
Update the email, mailing information and any required renewal answers before submitting.
Inspect the expiration period and fee
The transition can create a longer initial alignment period. Review the exact new expiration and itemized portal charge before paying.
Save confirmation and verify again
Retain the receipt, then return to Public Search to confirm that the status and expiration updated correctly.
Submission does not justify practising after the displayed expiration unless DOPL has actually renewed or otherwise authorized the credential. Verify the live status.
A nurse unable to afford the new two-year renewal amount is directed by DOPL to call 208-334-3233 to discuss available options.
Idaho continuing-competence requirements: avoid outdated summaries
Older online guides may describe a universal “15 CE hours plus another activity” framework for every Idaho RN or LPN. The current 2026 rule chapter does not publish that former general RN/LPN formula in its renewal provisions.
RN and LPN renewal
Complete the attestations presented in the current DOPL renewal. Do not enter an old CE number merely because it appears on a third-party website.
Portal requests documentation
When the account specifically requests competency evidence, use the instructions shown and ask HP-Licensing@dopl.idaho.gov before submitting unrelated certificates.
APRN requirements are explicit
APRNs must maintain RN authority, current recognized national certification and evidence of acceptable peer-review participation.
| Credential or situation | Current practical requirement | Evidence to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| RN or LPN ordinary renewal | Complete the current portal renewal and all credential-specific attestations. | Anything specifically requested by DOPL or shown in the renewal workflow. |
| APRN renewal | Maintain Idaho RN license or privilege, recognized national certification and acceptable peer-review participation. | RN record, certification documentation and peer-review evidence. |
| Reinstatement | Fingerprints, employment verification and possible continued-competence evidence. | Application-specific documents and any Board-requested competence proof. |
| Restricted or disciplined license | Comply with the specific terms of the Board order. | Only the records required by the order and Board instructions. |
This section does not mean that professional development is unnecessary. It means the nurse should use the current Idaho rule chapter, portal questions and Board instructions rather than a superseded third-party checklist.
Idaho nursing fees and transition-related payment warnings
The Board page publishes operational fees, while the 2026 transition notice says charges will be adjusted to the whole-year license period. Treat the live portal total as the final transaction amount.
| Transaction | Published Board amount | What the amount includes or means |
|---|---|---|
| RN or LPN examination application | $102 | Published total includes the $32 fingerprint-processing fee. |
| RN or LPN endorsement application | $102 | Published total includes the $32 fingerprint-processing fee. |
| International RN or LPN application | $102 | Published total includes fingerprint processing; other evaluation costs may be separate. |
| RN or LPN reinstatement | $102 | Board page amount includes the $32 fingerprint fee; current rules also identify a reinstatement fee structure. |
| APRN initial or reinstatement | $102 | Published Board amount includes fingerprint processing. |
| RN, LPN or APRN renewal | $70 | Legacy published renewal amount; the birthday transition can alter the portal-calculated total. |
| Temporary RN, LPN or APRN license | $25 | Available only with a renewable-license application. |
| Medication Assistant–Certified initial | $100 | Initial MA-C application. |
| Medication Assistant–Certified renewal | $35 | MA-C is separate from the CNA Registry certificate. |
| Virtual Telehealth Nurse Practitioner | $35 | This license type is excluded from the 2026 nursing birthday-transition chart. |
| Nursys endorsement verification | $30 to NCSBN | Paid verification sent for licensure in another jurisdiction. |
| Public DOPL license search | No search fee | Use for public status checking; it is not the paid endorsement-verification service. |
Do not assume the $70 line is your 2026 checkout total. DOPL says transitioned fees are adjusted for the extended period and charged in whole years. Review the exact amount before submitting a non-routine renewal.
Idaho’s current rule schedule effective July 1, 2026 lists maximum fee categories, while the Board webpage publishes current operational amounts. These figures should not be combined manually to calculate a transition invoice.
Check an Idaho nursing application and missing documents
Monitor progress through the status link in the Nurse Portal. Once a complete application and every required document have been received, final review can take up to five business days.
Sign in to the account used to apply
Do not create another profile because the license is not yet visible in Public Search.
Open Nurse PortalOpen the application status link
Read every pending item separately rather than treating “submitted” as a complete application.
Identify who must send each document
Transcripts must come from the original institution or transcript service. Employment verification should come from the employer or third party.
Confirm fingerprint submission
Law-enforcement agencies and fingerprinting stations may submit through LiveScan. Follow the Board’s current fingerprint instructions.
Allow final review after completion
The five-business-day estimate begins after the Board has received the complete application and all necessary documents.
Act before the one-year expiration
An incomplete application and fee remain valid for one year. After that period, a new application and fee may be required.
| Pending item | Correct sender | Common error |
|---|---|---|
| Official transcript or Affidavit of Graduation | Original school or recognized transcript service. | Applicant uploads an unofficial copy. |
| Employment verification | Employer or authorized third party after applicant completes the top portion. | Applicant sends the employer section personally. |
| Fingerprints | Approved law-enforcement or fingerprinting route using current instructions. | Prints are submitted without correct identifying information. |
| License verification | Nursys or the non-participating licensing authority. | Free QuickConfirm is mistaken for paid endorsement verification. |
| National APRN certification | Certifying organization or acceptable applicant documentation. | A screenshot is submitted instead of an accepted certificate or wallet card. |
| Name-change evidence | Applicant through upload or licensing email. | State identification is supplied without the marriage, divorce or court document explaining the change. |
“I am requesting help with my Idaho __________ application submitted on __________. The portal currently lists __________ as incomplete. The school, employer, board or service sent it on __________ using __________. Please confirm whether it has been matched and identify the exact remaining action.”
Do not practise merely because the application entered final review. Confirm that DOPL has issued the permanent or temporary authority shown in Public Search.
Submit Idaho nursing fingerprints without creating a matching delay
Fingerprints are included in the published $102 examination, endorsement, international and reinstatement application totals. Board information says fingerprint results remain valid for up to six months.
Start the correct application
Confirm the application type before paying or submitting fingerprints.
Download the current fingerprint instructions
Use the form linked from Nursing Resources rather than an old packet saved on another website.
Open Nursing FormsUse an accepted fingerprinting provider
Law-enforcement agencies or fingerprinting stations may use LiveScan for fully digital submission.
Mail physical material to the Board address
Use Idaho Board of Nursing, 11341 W. Chinden Blvd., Building 4, Boise, ID 83714 when the current instructions require mailing.
Monitor the application status
Do not repeat the fingerprint process simply because the portal has not yet matched the result.
Reinstatement requires a current fingerprint-based criminal-history check because the previous nursing license is no longer active.
Apply for Idaho RN or LPN licensure by endorsement
An applicant already licensed in another nursing jurisdiction generally uses endorsement. The file can require official verification, education documents, fingerprints and legal-history information.
Start the Idaho endorsement application
Select the correct RN or LPN application in DOPL Online Services.
Start Idaho ApplicationOrder official nursing verification
Use Nursys Nurse License Verification for Endorsement when the issuing jurisdiction participates.
Order Nursys VerificationArrange school documentation
The original institution or transcript service must send the official transcript or Affidavit of Graduation directly to the Board.
Complete the Idaho fingerprint process
Follow the current Board packet and monitor the portal for matching.
Submit additional disclosures when applicable
Provide the required criminal-conviction, disciplinary or other supporting documentation requested by the application.
Confirm issuance before working
A completed Nursys transaction or submitted application does not itself create Idaho nursing authority.
An individual originally licensed in Idaho before 1989 who did not maintain an active license through 1989 should contact the Board before attempting an Idaho-to-another-state Nursys verification.
Nursys QuickConfirm is a free status search. Nursys Nurse License Verification for Endorsement is the paid service used to send official verification to another nursing board.
Idaho multistate-license and primary-residence checks
Idaho is a Nurse Licensure Compact state. A nurse seeking an Idaho multistate RN or LPN license must treat Idaho as the legal primary state of residence and satisfy the compact’s uniform requirements.
Primary state of residence
The home state is based on legal residency, not merely the location of an employer, temporary apartment or travel assignment.
Verify through Nursys
Nursys can show compact status and multistate authority across participating nursing jurisdictions.
APRN authority is separate
The RN compact does not automatically create advanced-practice authority in Idaho or another state.
Idaho APRN application and renewal requirements
Idaho APRN renewal is not satisfied by checking the APRN expiration alone. The current rules require underlying Idaho RN authority or privilege, recognized national certification and acceptable peer-review participation.
Current RN license or privilege
The APRN must maintain a current registered-nurse license or privilege to practise in Idaho.
National certification
Evidence must show current APRN certification from a national organization recognized by the Board.
Peer-review participation
The APRN must provide evidence satisfactory to the Board of participation in an acceptable peer-review process.
| APRN task | What to prepare | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Initial application | RN authority, graduate or post-graduate APRN education and recognized national certification. | Submitting an uncertified screenshot rather than acceptable certification evidence. |
| Renewal | Current RN authority, national certification and acceptable peer-review evidence. | Assuming the APRN record alone replaces RN verification. |
| Endorsement | Existing APRN license information, education, current certification and Idaho application documents. | Relying only on an RN compact privilege for advanced-practice work. |
| Reinstatement | Current fingerprint check, RN authority, current certification and any Board-requested evidence. | Submitting renewal instead of reinstatement after the APRN license has lapsed. |
Idaho accepts national-certification documentation from the certifying body or the applicant, including a wall certificate or wallet card, but the Board FAQ says screenshots are not accepted.
Reinstate an Idaho nursing license
Reinstatement is not a routine renewal. Idaho requires a current fingerprint-based criminal-history check and can require employment verification or continued-competence evidence.
Verify the present status
Confirm that the credential is lapsed, inactive, restricted or otherwise requires reinstatement.
Start the reinstatement application
Use DOPL Online Services and select the exact RN, LPN or APRN reinstatement route.
Complete new fingerprints
The Board requires fingerprints because the prior nursing license is no longer active.
Arrange employment verification
Complete the applicant portion and have the employer or third party send the completed form directly to the Board.
Respond to competence requests
Submit only the continuing-competence or practice evidence requested for the individual application.
Verify active status before returning
The Board FAQ states that an applicant does not retake NCLEX solely to reinstate, but practice cannot resume until authority is restored.
Idaho’s Board FAQ says NCLEX re-examination is not required simply because an RN or LPN is reinstating a previously issued license.
A restricted, disciplined or revoked-license application can require additional Board review, compliance evidence or appearance before the Board. Follow the controlling order.
Idaho temporary and graduate nursing licenses
Temporary-license application
A temporary license cannot be requested by itself. The applicant must also apply for a renewable Idaho license.
Published temporary fee
The Board page lists a $25 temporary-license fee for RN, LPN and APRN temporary applications.
Graduate temporary license
The applicant must have NCLEX Authorization to Test. Graduate temporary authority lasts 90 days, is conditional and cannot be extended.
Do not choose a one-time short-term or conditional temporary application merely because it appears faster. Match the portal application to the exact work and licensing situation.
Idaho CNA verification and renewal
Idaho CNA certificates are handled by the Department of Health and Welfare Nurse Aide Registry, not the DOPL Board of Nursing portal. Employers must verify CNA currency when hiring and when certification renews.
Search the Idaho Nurse Aide Registry
Use the Prometric registry record to confirm current certification.
Search CNA RegistryRenew during the expiration month
The Registry recommends submitting the renewal request near the beginning of the month in which the certificate expires.
Download and complete the renewal form
Complete every section and follow the submission directions printed on the form.
Open CNA Renewal PageHave the employer verify paid work
Provide evidence of at least eight paid CNA or nursing-related service hours completed before the certificate lapsed.
Use payroll proof when the employer cannot sign
The Registry says a W-2 or pay stubs showing the employer and qualifying period can be submitted.
Recheck the new expiration
The renewed certificate expires 24 months after the last qualifying work date, not automatically two years after the old expiration.
A CNA unable to prove eight paid nursing or nursing-related hours during the previous 24 months may need to retake the written and skills examinations.
CNA scope
Idaho treats CNAs as unlicensed assistive personnel working under licensed-nurse direction and facility policies. CNA duties cannot include functions reserved for licensed nurses.
Training length
Idaho CNA training consists of 120 hours: 80 classroom hours and 40 clinical hours.
Verify an Idaho nursing program before enrolling
The Board publishes Idaho nursing programs and a separate report showing first-time NCLEX pass rates for current Idaho program graduates. Match the exact school, location and program type.
Open the Board of Nursing program list
Confirm that the exact PN, associate, bachelor’s or advanced-practice program appears on the current Board page.
View Idaho ProgramsMatch campus and pathway
Schools can offer different LPN, ADN, BSN, bridge, completion and graduate programs at different locations.
Review several NCLEX years
The Board’s report provides first-time pass-rate results for 2023, 2024 and 2025.
Open NCLEX Pass RatesVerify accreditation
Current Board rules reference nursing accreditation through ACEN, CCNE or CNEA, including limited approval while a program seeks accreditation.
Ask about conditional or limited approval
Request written information about accreditation deadlines and the effect on students already enrolled.
Check fraud warnings
Review the Board’s Operation Nightingale warning before accepting unfamiliar out-of-state or online nursing-program claims.
Current Idaho rules allow full approval to be reconsidered when a program’s first-time licensing-exam pass rate remains below 80% for two consecutive calendar years.
Do not rely on a school’s marketing statement that it is “approved” without matching the exact institution, campus and nursing pathway on the Board’s current records.
Fix name, email, portal and document problems
Legal name change
Upload or email state-issued identification plus the marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order or judgment explaining the change.
Keep email current
The Board is paperless and relies on email for licensing communication. Update the account before losing access to an old employer or school address.
Use readable documents
The Board accepts forms electronically and prefers PDF for uploads and emailed documentation.
Avoid duplicate profiles
Recover the established DOPL account before creating another profile that may not display the current license or pending application.
Use Nursys e-Notify
Nurses and employers can use Nursys notifications to monitor status and expiration changes.
Unexpected payment request
DOPL warns about scammers impersonating its office and asking for Social Security, birth-date or payment information.
DOPL says it will not initiate contact to request sensitive personal information. Do not click an unexpected licensing-payment link. End the contact and independently open the official portal or call 208-334-3233.
