Verify a Hawaii Nurse—or Prepare Correctly for the 2027 Renewal
People usually reach this page because they need a clear answer now: Is the nurse’s Hawaii license active? Why is there no renewal button in 2026? Can a license forfeited in 2025 still be restored? Which competency activity will count?
Hawaii uses a statewide odd-year renewal cycle rather than each nurse’s birthday. This guide brings together the current public lookup, MyPVL, continuing-competency, fingerprint, restoration, endorsement, APRN and program-check instructions.
There is no regular 2026 renewal deadline. The current biennium runs from July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2027. Use 2026 to complete one qualifying competency pathway and verify that any required fingerprint check is already on file.
Verify a Hawaii nurse
Check original issue date, status, expiration and disciplinary information.
Prepare for June 30, 2027
Complete one qualifying competency option during the current biennium.
Restore a forfeited license
RN/LPN restoration may still be available; APRN deadlines are shorter.
Apply by endorsement
Submit Hawaii-specific verification, NPDB and fingerprint requirements.
Check a pending application
Review uploaded files, payment receipt and incomplete source documents.
Verify a nursing program
Check recognized Hawaii schools and the latest official NCLEX report.
Hawaii nursing-license facts to understand in 2026
Do not search for a 2026 renewal button. Hawaii nursing licenses renew by June 30 of odd-numbered years. The next statewide deadline is June 30, 2027.
All licenses follow the statewide cycle
Renewal is not tied to an individual birthday. The current period ends June 30, 2027.
Choose one competency pathway
Unless exempt, complete one full Board-recognized learning activity. Partial activities cannot be combined.
Renewal uses an attestation
Keep evidence ready because the Board can select licensees for a post-renewal competency audit.
Fingerprinting is a one-time requirement
A nurse who has not completed the Hawaii Board-specific criminal-history check must do so when required.
APRN and RN renewals are connected
A Hawaii APRN license cannot be renewed unless the underlying RN license is also renewed.
CNA services use a different program
Hawaii nurse-aide examination, reciprocity and registry verification are handled through the Nurse Aide Program and Prometric.

How to verify a Hawaii LPN, RN or APRN license
Hawaii’s public license search provides official state information at no charge, including original issue date, expiration, status and disciplinary action.
Open MyPVL Public License Search
The public search does not require the nurse’s private MyPVL login.
Open Official License SearchSelect the nursing credential
Choose Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
Search by license number when available
A license number is safer than relying on a common first and last name.
Review the full record
Confirm original issue date, current status, June 30 expiration and available disciplinary information.
Use Nursys for interstate RN/LPN verification
A Hawaii RN or LPN applying to another nursing board must request verification through Nursys.
Order Nursys VerificationRecord when the lookup occurred
Employers should retain the official result and date checked under their credentialing policy.
| Record or status | What it means | Correct next action |
|---|---|---|
| Active | The displayed credential is current under the listed details. | Confirm profession, expiration and disciplinary information. |
| Inactive | Hawaii considers the person unlicensed for active practice. | Do not practise until formal reactivation is complete. |
| Forfeited | The license was not renewed by the required deadline. | Check whether restoration remains available for the profession. |
| Terminated | The restoration deadline has passed. | Apply as a new applicant and meet current licensure requirements. |
| Disciplinary action listed | The regulator has posted a public licensing action or condition. | Read the available official order before making a decision. |
| No result | The spelling, name, profession or license number may not match. | Try a former legal name and verify the credential type. |

What Hawaii nurses should do during 2026
The next renewal deadline is June 30, 2027. The Board has not yet posted the exact 2027 online opening date, so the useful 2026 task is completing competency and organizing evidence.
| Time period | What counts | Useful action |
|---|---|---|
| July 1, 2025–June 30, 2027 | Qualifying competency activity completed inside the current biennium. | Choose one pathway and retain complete documentation. |
| During 2026 | CE, academic study, preceptorship or another complete recognized option. | Do not wait until the 2027 renewal window to begin. |
| By approximately April 2027 | Written extension request for qualifying illness or extended active military duty. | Submit at least two months before the deadline; late requests are not accepted. |
| June 30, 2027 | Final renewal and competency-completion deadline. | Renew through MyPVL and pay the amount shown by the portal. |
| After the 2027 audit notice | Proof supporting the competency attestation. | Submit the requested evidence within 60 days. |
Verify your current license
Confirm that the public record is active and expires June 30, 2027.
Choose one competency pathway
Select the option you can fully complete within the July 2025–June 2027 period.
Save complete proof
Keep certificates, transcripts, preceptor forms, publication evidence or program-completion records.
Verify fingerprint compliance
If Hawaii Board-specific fingerprinting has not been completed, follow the current Board instructions.
Link the license to MyPVL
Sign in and use “Find my license” so the renewal option can appear when the Board opens the 2027 period.
Open MyPVLCheck the official renewal page in 2027
Use the Board page for the opening date and current fee instead of copying the previous cycle’s amount.
Open Official Board PageThe last published on-time fees were $196 for an active RN or LPN, $36 for an active APRN and $12 for inactive status. These were the prior renewal-cycle amounts; confirm the actual 2027 fee before payment.
A nurse may not practise under a forfeited, expired or inactive Hawaii license. Completing competency alone does not renew or reactivate the credential.
Hawaii competency pathways for the 2025–2027 biennium
Unless exempt, an LPN, RN or qualifying APRN must complete exactly one recognized pathway. Hours or activities from different options cannot be combined.
| Pathway | Minimum requirement | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Continuing education | At least 30 contact hours from approved providers. | Certificates showing course, provider, date and awarded hours. |
| Board-approved refresher course | 60 didactic hours plus 60 clinical hours. | Official course and clinical-completion documentation. |
| Post-licensure academic education | At least two semester credits from an accredited nursing program. | Official transcript showing the qualifying course and credits. |
| Preceptor activity | 120 hours in a one-to-one organized preceptorship. | Completed Board preceptor form and supporting verification. |
| Research or evidence-based practice | Completed qualifying research or a Board-preapproved EBP project. | Abstract, approval and evidence of project completion. |
| Peer-reviewed publication | Author or co-author of a qualifying nursing or health publication. | Copy of the published article, book or chapter. |
| Nursing education presentation | At least five contact hours of organized instruction qualifying as CE. | Outline, invitation or acceptance and proof the presentation occurred. |
| Nurse residency program | Completion of a Board-recognized nurse residency. | Certificate or official completion letter. |
| Similar or other activity | Board preapproval before beginning the activity. | Preapproval letter and completion documentation. |
Common exemptions
Current national certification
A qualifying LPN, RN or APRN certification can satisfy the competency requirement under the Board’s current guidance.
Recent nursing graduate
An LPN or RN who graduated within the previous 12 months can qualify for the listed graduate exemption.
Exemption does not cancel renewal
An exempt nurse must still complete renewal and pay the applicable fee by June 30, 2027.
Do not combine 15 CE hours with half of another pathway. The Board’s current booklet requires exactly one complete option unless an exemption applies.
Keep competency records for at least four years—two bienniums. If selected for audit, submit the requested evidence within 60 days of receiving the notice.
Hawaii APRN and prescriptive-authority renewal rules
APRN renewal depends on the underlying RN license. Prescriptive-authority requirements add national certification and specialty-specific education.
| APRN situation | Requirement | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| APRN without prescriptive authority | Current national certification in the practice role can satisfy competency. | Maintain certification and renew the RN and APRN credentials. |
| APRN with prescriptive authority | Current national certification plus 30 CE hours. | Complete all required hours between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2027. |
| Pharmacology component | At least eight of the 30 hours must be pharmacology. | Keep certificates that clearly identify pharmacology content. |
| Practice-specialty component | At least 22 hours must be in the APRN practice specialty. | Do not use unrelated general courses to fill the specialty requirement. |
| RN license not renewed | The APRN license cannot be renewed independently. | Complete RN and APRN renewal together. |
| Stopping prescriptive authority | A signed written statement must be submitted after online renewal. | Contact the Board before assuming authority was removed automatically. |
An out-of-state APRN license or prescriptive authority does not automatically authorize prescribing in Hawaii. Hawaii APRN licensure, prescriptive authority and any applicable controlled-substance registration must be granted first.
Hawaii Board fingerprint requirements
Hawaii uses a Board-specific electronic fingerprint process for state and FBI criminal-history checks. Fingerprints taken for an employer or another board do not replace this requirement.
Confirm whether fingerprinting is required
New applicants, restoration applicants and reactivation applicants must complete the requirement.
Use the correct Fieldprint service
Schedule through Fieldprint Hawaii or a supported nationwide location.
Open Fieldprint HawaiiEnter the Board code exactly
Use FPHIBrdNursing. The code connects the result to the Hawaii Board of Nursing.
File the application within 30 days
Endorsement applicants should submit the license application within 30 days of fingerprinting so the result remains obtainable.
Pay Fieldprint directly
The fingerprint-processing amount is separate from the Board application or restoration fee.
Do not reuse another agency’s fingerprints
Employer, federal, other-state or other-board prints cannot be substituted for the Hawaii nursing submission.
One submission covers Hawaii nurse licenses
One completed Hawaii nursing fingerprint submission can cover multiple Hawaii nurse credentials held by the same person.
Inactive renewal is different
Renewing an inactive license does not require fingerprinting, but later reactivation does.
Unretrievable results may require new prints
Incorrect codes, delayed applications or unusable submissions can require another appointment and payment.
Entering the wrong Fieldprint code can prevent the Board from retrieving the report. Verify that the department is identified as the Hawaii Board of Nursing before completing payment.
Restore a Hawaii license forfeited in 2025
Restoration deadlines differ sharply. RN and LPN licenses can generally be restored within two years, while APRN licenses have only a six-month restoration period.
| License | Restoration period | Position in July 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| RN or LPN forfeited June 30, 2025 | Within two years after expiration. | Restoration may still be available before the two-year period ends. |
| APRN forfeited June 30, 2025 | Within six months after expiration. | The six-month period has passed; contact the Board about applying as a new applicant. |
| RN/LPN beyond two years | No restoration after the statutory period. | The license is terminated and current new-applicant rules apply. |
Check the public status
Confirm the profession, forfeited date and whether the record is forfeited or terminated.
Request the current restoration form
Use the Board’s license-continuation page or contact the PVL licensing branch.
Complete competency evidence
Restoration applicants must provide proof rather than relying only on an online attestation.
Complete Hawaii Board fingerprinting
Restoration and reactivation applicants must comply with the electronic criminal-history check.
Pay the correct restoration amount
The current Board page lists $226 for active RN/LPN restoration and $42 for inactive restoration.
Wait for active status before working
Submitting the form does not restore practice authority. Confirm the updated public record.
A nurse on forfeited or inactive status is unlicensed for practice. Do not accept a shift, orientation, telehealth assignment or other nursing duty until the public status is active.
Hawaii nursing renewal, restoration and verification fees
The 2027 renewal fee has not yet been posted as a new cycle amount. The table distinguishes currently published continuation fees from current endorsement and verification charges.
| Transaction | Published amount | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| RN or LPN active on-time renewal | $196 | Last published cycle amount; confirm the 2027 portal fee. |
| RN or LPN inactive renewal | $12 | Inactive status does not authorize nursing practice. |
| APRN active on-time renewal | $36 | The underlying RN license must also be renewed. |
| APRN inactive renewal | $12 | Confirm whether the RN status also needs action. |
| RN or LPN active restoration | $226 | Competency and fingerprint evidence are also required. |
| RN or LPN inactive restoration | $42 | The restored inactive credential still does not authorize practice. |
| APRN active restoration | $66 | Only available inside the six-month APRN restoration period. |
| APRN inactive restoration | $42 | Only available inside the applicable restoration period. |
| RN/LPN endorsement issued July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027 | $186 | Current endorsement form amount for this issuance period. |
| Free online public verification | $0 | Download the official public search result. |
| Standard written PVL verification | $15 | Allow approximately 20 business days after receipt. |
| Fingerprint processing | Varies | Paid directly to Fieldprint, separate from Board fees. |
RN/LPN initial, renewal and restoration costs include a $60 Hawaii State Center for Nursing assessment. Application, Nursys, NPDB, fingerprint and examination costs can be separate.
Check a Hawaii nursing application and find the missing item
MyPVL provides an email receipt and application-status access. Most delays are caused by incomplete forms or documents that must come from an outside source.
Use the original MyPVL account
Sign in with the account used to upload and pay for the application.
Open MyPVLOpen the correct application
Select examination, endorsement, temporary permit, APRN or prescriptive authority.
Review every incomplete requirement
Check fingerprints, NPDB, license verification, education, identity and explanation documents.
Confirm the required sender
A state board, nursing school, employer, Nursys or credential evaluator may need to send the document directly.
Check the document format
For an NPDB self-query, the Board accepts the original hardcopy or original emailed PDF—not a photo or secured link.
Allow review after the file is complete
Current endorsement instructions describe normal processing as approximately 15–20 working days for a complete application.
| Pending item | What to verify | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| Original-state verification | Whether the original board sent exam, education, status and discipline information. | Use Nursys or the originating board’s direct-verification process. |
| NPDB self-query | Whether the original PDF or hardcopy report was sent. | Forward the original PDF to nursing@dcca.hawaii.gov without secured links. |
| Fingerprint result | Correct code, correct agency and application filed within 30 days. | Contact the Board before repeating and paying again. |
| Education evaluation | Whether a Board-recognized evaluator supplied the foreign-education report. | Have the evaluator send the report in the required official format. |
| Yes-answer documents | Signed explanation and certified court or disciplinary records. | Submit every item requested by the application instructions. |
| Application approaching one year | Whether all licensing requirements can be completed before abandonment. | Contact the Board promptly; an incomplete application is abandoned after one year. |
“I submitted a Hawaii _____ nursing application on _____. My application reference is _____. MyPVL shows _____ as incomplete. The document was sent by _____ on _____ using _____. Please confirm whether it has been matched and identify the exact remaining requirement.”
Hawaii RN and LPN licensure by endorsement
Hawaii requires a state-specific endorsement application and source documents. An out-of-state license or pending application alone does not authorize Hawaii practice.
Use the current endorsement application
Older application versions are not accepted and can delay processing.
Open Current ApplicationsComplete Hawaii Board fingerprinting
Use Fieldprint code FPHIBrdNursing and file the license application within 30 days of fingerprinting.
Obtain an NPDB self-query
Out-of-state endorsement applicants must send the original hardcopy or original downloadable PDF.
Order original-state verification
The report must confirm exam, education, dates, status and disciplinary history. Nursys is used when available.
Provide education evidence
Foreign-educated applicants may need a Board-recognized professional credentials evaluation.
Verify issuance before practising
Do not rely on an application receipt. Confirm the Hawaii license or temporary permit in the public search.
Temporary permit choices
Standalone temporary permit
Intended for a qualifying RN or LPN who does not plan to apply for permanent Hawaii licensure and has accepted employment with one Hawaii health-care entity.
Combined permit and endorsement
A qualifying out-of-state RN or LPN may apply for both in one mailed or hand-delivered application. The temporary permit lasts until full licensure or no longer than one year.
The combined temporary-permit and endorsement application cannot be submitted through MyPVL. It must be mailed or hand-delivered with the required Hawaii employer certification.
Hawaii does not offer the ordinary RN/LPN temporary permit for APRN practice. APRN and prescriptive-authority requirements must be completed separately.
Use MyPVL, Nursys or written verification correctly
