Verify an Arizona Nurse—or Renew Without Failing the 960-Hour Test
Arizona renewal works differently from many states. RNs and LPNs renew every four years, but the Board does not simply ask for a set number of continuing-education hours. The critical question is whether the nurse meets one of Arizona’s recent-practice, recent-graduation or refresher-course pathways.
This guide explains where to verify RN, LPN, APRN and nursing-assistant credentials, how to renew through the Nurse Portal, what the 960-hour requirement means, which fees apply and how to solve fingerprint, endorsement and deficiency delays.
Use Nursys QuickConfirm for Arizona RN, LPN and APRN records. Use the AZBN Verification Portal for CNA, LNA, CMA, LHA and Arizona School Nurse credentials.
Verify a nurse
Check current status, expiration, compact authority and discipline.
Renew every four years
Confirm the April 1 due date, practice pathway and $160 fee.
Check application status
Read deficiency notices, uploads, fingerprint status and Board messages.
Apply by endorsement
Complete verification, fingerprints, citizenship proof and practice review.
Check multistate eligibility
Primary state of residence determines whether Arizona should issue the license.
Verify a nursing program
Check approval, recent violations, refresher programs and NCLEX reports.
Arizona nursing-license facts that control your next step
Arizona does not use a standard RN/LPN CE-hour renewal requirement. The nurse must meet one of four recent-practice or recent-education pathways. Do not purchase random CE courses expecting them to replace the 960-hour rule.
RN and LPN licenses renew every four years
Arizona’s published due date is April 1 in the applicable renewal year. Always verify the individual license record rather than calculating the year yourself.
Practice can include more than bedside work
Teaching, supervising, consulting, nursing-program clinical experience and qualifying volunteer nursing activities can count when they use nursing knowledge.
Arizona is a compact state
A nurse whose primary residence is another compact state generally should not apply in Arizona unless changing the primary state of residence to Arizona.
Arizona does not issue paper licenses
RN, LPN and APRN status is verified through Nursys. Assistant and aide credentials use the Arizona verification portal.
Card processing fee applies
Credit and debit card payments carry a $2 or 2.2% processing fee, whichever is greater. ACH eCheck remains free.
Name and address changes have a deadline
Arizona requires a legal name or address change to be reported through the Nurse Portal within 30 days.
How to verify an Arizona nursing license
Arizona uses two primary-source systems. Select the system by credential type before searching; otherwise a valid record can appear to be missing.
| Credential | Correct verification system | What to review |
|---|---|---|
| Registered Nurse | Nursys QuickConfirm | Status, expiration, compact status and discipline. |
| Licensed Practical Nurse | Nursys QuickConfirm | Status, expiration, compact status and discipline. |
| APRN | Nursys QuickConfirm | RN authority, APRN credential and disciplinary information. |
| CNA / LNA | AZBN Verification Portal | Certificate or license status and expiration. |
| CMA / LHA / School Nurse | AZBN Verification Portal | Credential type, status and expiration. |
Identify the credential type
Determine whether the person is an RN, LPN, APRN, CNA, LNA, CMA, LHA or School Nurse.
Open the correct primary-source search
Use Nursys for RN, LPN and APRN. Use Arizona’s verification portal for aide, assistant and School Nurse credentials.
Search with the license number when possible
A complete credential number usually reduces confusion caused by common names or previous surnames.
Open the complete result
Confirm profession, status, expiration, compact authority and disciplinary information rather than stopping at the name match.
Record the verification date
Employers should retain the source and date checked under their credentialing policy.
Arizona states that RN, LPN and APRN information is updated each business day and uploaded to Nursys. Nursys is considered a primary-source equivalent.

Renew an Arizona RN or LPN license
Arizona RN and LPN licenses are renewed through the Nurse Portal every four years. The nurse must meet one recent-practice or recent-education route and submit the $160 renewal fee.
Verify the renewal year
Check Nursys for the exact expiration rather than assuming every Arizona nurse renews in 2026.
Choose the practice pathway
Use 960 hours, recent graduation, an approved refresher course or a recent advanced nursing degree.
Renew in the Nurse Portal
Review profile information, disclosures, practice history and the payment amount.
Verify the updated record
The portal updates immediately after renewal; Nursys normally updates by the following day.
Confirm the license expiration and renewal year
Arizona publishes April 1 as the renewal due date, but the exact year is shown on the individual license record.
Verify ExpirationConfirm one qualifying practice pathway
Prepare accurate employment, education or refresher-course details before signing the renewal attestation.
Review Practice RoutesSign in to the existing Nurse Portal account
Use the account already connected to the license. Do not create a duplicate profile because the original email is unavailable.
Open Nurse PortalReview name, address and primary residence
Update residential and mailing information before submitting, especially when compact-state eligibility could change.
Submit the application and pay
The RN/LPN renewal fee is $160. A credit or debit card processing charge applies; ACH eCheck remains free.
Save proof and check the updated license
Retain the receipt or portal confirmation. Arizona no longer issues paper licenses.
If a nurse works after May 2 during the renewal year, Arizona can assess a $50 monthly late fee, up to $200, plus require a Late/Invalid License Questionnaire. A nurse who has not renewed before August 1 must stop practising until the Board renews the license.
APRN renewal is a separate application. A nurse holding an Arizona RN license must renew the RN first; the APRN renewal link should then appear in the Nurse Portal. National certification must be sent directly by the certifying agency.
Arizona’s 960-hour practice rule explained
An RN or LPN does not need to satisfy all four routes. Meeting any one qualifying route during the previous five years can satisfy Arizona’s practice requirement.
| Qualifying route | Requirement | Useful proof to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Recent nursing practice | At least 960 hours during the previous five years. | Employer, role, dates, total hours and description of nursing knowledge used. |
| Recent nursing-program graduation | Graduated and obtained a nursing degree during the previous five years. | School, degree, graduation date and official education documentation if requested. |
| Approved refresher course | Completed an Arizona Board-approved refresher course during the previous five years. | Program name, completion record and Board-required documentation. |
| Advanced nursing degree | Obtained an approved advanced nursing degree during the previous five years. | Examples include LPN-to-RN, RN-to-BSN, master’s or doctorate records. |
Activities that can count as nursing practice
Direct patient care
Bedside nursing and other licensed clinical roles normally qualify.
Nursing education
Teaching nursing or completing clinical experience in a nursing program can qualify.
Supervision or consulting
Supervisory, administrative or consulting work can qualify when nursing knowledge is required or recommended.
Volunteer nursing
Qualifying volunteer work within the legal scope of nursing can count, including some health-screening activities.
Family caregiving
Ordinary care of a family member does not automatically satisfy the 960-hour requirement.
Document the nursing knowledge used
Arizona may require a description of duties, employer details, job title, dates and total hours.
Do not estimate or invent practice hours. Arizona warns that a false practice attestation can lead to civil penalties or licensing action, including censure, probation, suspension or revocation.
A nurse who does not qualify under one of the four pathways can enroll in an Arizona Board-approved refresher course and request a temporary license for refresher-course clinical practice.
Arizona nursing renewal, endorsement and application fees
Arizona Board fees are non-refundable. The displayed portal amount can include a Board fee, background-check charge and payment-processing fee.
| Transaction | Published fee | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| RN/LPN renewal | $160 | Required every four years. |
| RN/LPN endorsement | $150 | Background-check fee up to $50 is additional. |
| Temporary endorsement license | $50 | Optional and subject to eligibility. |
| RN/LPN examination and licensure | $300 | NCLEX registration with Pearson VUE is separate. |
| RN/LPN reinstatement | $150 | Additional practice or refresher requirements may apply. |
| Initial APRN certification | $150 | Background check and optional prescribing fees may also apply. |
| Prescribing/dispensing authority | $150 | Separate from the initial APRN application. |
| CNA renewal | $0 | CNA renewal is every two years. |
| LNA renewal | $50 | LNA renewal is every two years. |
| Arizona verification for APRN/CNA/LNA or international use | $50 | Certain verification requests can take approximately three weeks. |
| Credit/debit processing | $2 or 2.2% | Whichever is greater; ACH eCheck is free. |
Nursys verification is normally $30 per verification sent. Pay Nursys directly when the receiving board uses that service; do not send the Nursys payment to AZBN.
Check an Arizona nursing application in the Nurse Portal
The Nurse Portal is the official place to check examination, endorsement, renewal, APRN and assistant application status. Deficiency notices identify items that remain outstanding.
Log in to the original Nurse Portal account
Use the profile that submitted the application. Avoid a duplicate account even when the old email is unavailable.
Open Nurse PortalOpen the correct application
Select RN/LPN examination, endorsement, renewal, APRN, CNA, LNA or the exact transaction already submitted.
Read the deficiency notice completely
The notice identifies missing fingerprints, citizenship proof, verification, education documents, examination results or disclosure records.
Confirm who must send each document
A school, Nursys, licensing board, certification agency or fingerprint provider may need to submit the item directly.
Fix the deficiency before the stated deadline
If the applicant does not remedy an outstanding requirement in time, Arizona can withdraw the application.
Keep dates and delivery evidence
Record the sender, submission date, tracking number and exact portal wording before contacting the Board.
| Pending item | What to verify | Frequent mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Fingerprint result | Correct portal fingerprint code, payment and submission date. | Using a DPS clearance card as a substitute or selecting agency payment. |
| License verification | Whether the original state participates in Nursys. | Uploading a screenshot instead of ordering official verification. |
| Citizenship or lawful-presence proof | The uploaded document is an accepted type and readable. | Assuming a previous application automatically covers every new credential. |
| Official transcript | The school sent the record directly and included the graduation date and degree. | Uploading an unofficial student transcript. |
| National certification | The credentialing agency sent current issue, expiration, category and specialty information. | Uploading a personal copy when direct verification is required. |
A withdrawn application does not remain open indefinitely. To continue later, the applicant may need to submit a new application and pay another non-refundable fee.
“I am checking my Arizona _____ application submitted on _____. My application or license number is _____. The Nurse Portal shows _____ as deficient. The item was sent by _____ on _____ using _____. Please confirm whether it has been matched to my application and identify the exact remaining requirement.”
Arizona RN and LPN licensure by endorsement
Endorsement applies to a nurse who completed an approved program, passed NCLEX or an accepted predecessor examination and already holds an RN or LPN license in another state or territory.
If your primary state of residence is another compact state and you already hold a valid multistate license, you generally do not need an Arizona RN or LPN license unless you are changing your primary residence to Arizona.
Confirm Arizona is the correct licensing state
Your primary state of residence is generally where you vote, pay taxes and hold your driver’s license.
Confirm the 960-hour or recent-education requirement
Endorsement applicants must also meet one of Arizona’s recent-practice, graduation, refresher or advanced-degree pathways.
Submit the RN/LPN endorsement application
Use the Arizona Nurse Portal and pay the $150 application fee plus applicable background-check charges.
Start EndorsementOrder verification from the original state
Use Nursys when the original state participates. A non-Nursys state must send verification directly to Arizona.
Order VerificationUpload citizenship or lawful-presence documentation
Use an accepted document and ensure the image is readable before submission.
Submit fingerprints early
A permanent license cannot be issued until the required state and federal background results are received.
Arizona charges $50 for an optional temporary RN/LPN endorsement license. Eligibility is not automatic, and unresolved investigation or documentation issues can prevent temporary issuance.
Arizona multistate-license eligibility
Arizona evaluates RN and LPN applicants for multistate eligibility. An applicant who does not qualify for multistate status may still be evaluated for a single-state Arizona license.
| Your situation | Correct route | Practical result |
|---|---|---|
| Arizona is your primary state of residence | Apply or renew through Arizona. | AZBN can assess multistate eligibility. |
| Another compact state is your primary residence | Maintain the home-state multistate license. | Do not apply in Arizona solely to practise under compact privilege. |
| Moving permanently to Arizona | Apply to Arizona as the new primary state. | Arizona reviews residency and multistate eligibility. |
| Not eligible for multistate status | Arizona may evaluate single-state eligibility. | The license, if issued, is valid only for Arizona practice. |
| APRN practice | Maintain valid RN authority plus Arizona APRN certification. | The RN compact does not create automatic APRN authority. |
Compact eligibility is not based only on living temporarily in Arizona. Arizona uses the primary state of residence, supported by legal-residency indicators such as voting, taxes and driver’s-license records.
Arizona nursing fingerprint steps and common delays
Initial RN/LPN examination, endorsement and many regulated credentials require fingerprints. Applicants in Arizona can use electronic fingerprinting; applicants outside Arizona may need the accepted physical-card process.
Electronic fingerprints in Arizona
Use the fingerprint code supplied in the Nurse Portal Message Center, register through Arizona DPS, select “Submit and Pay” and pay the electronic fingerprint fee yourself.
Physical FD-258 card
Arizona accepts the blue-and-white FD-258 applicant card. A law-enforcement or fingerprint agency must verify identity and take the prints.
Wait for the application-specific fingerprint instruction
Use the code or form connected to the actual Arizona application.
Use the correct fingerprint route
Electronic fingerprint partners are currently available for applicants physically located in Arizona.
Pay the applicant charge
Do not select “Request Employer/Agency Pay”; AZBN says that choice will be declined and can delay processing.
Monitor the portal rather than repeating immediately
Fingerprint results can take 8–12 weeks. Repeating prints without identifying the original problem can create confusion.
An Arizona DPS fingerprint-clearance card is not a substitute for the Board-required applicant fingerprint process. Self-taken fingerprints are also not accepted.
Verify an Arizona nursing or refresher program
Arizona updates approved program lists after Board meetings and separately publishes programs with current or recent violations, surrendered approvals and NCLEX pass-rate reports.
Open the official program lists
Choose prelicensure, APRN, nursing assistant, refresher, CMA, CRNA or LHA programs.
Open Approved ProgramsMatch the exact campus and credential
A school brand can operate multiple campuses or programs with different Board records.
Check current or recent violations
Review consent agreements, censures, probation and other Board documents rather than relying only on “approved” status.
Review Program ActionsCompare 2026 NCLEX pass rates
Use the RN or PN quarterly report and compare multiple periods, testing volume and statewide results.
Check NCLEX ReportsCheck accreditation separately
Arizona Board approval and national nursing-program accreditation are different reviews.
Confirm total cost and clinical placement
Get tuition, mandatory fees, refund policy, transfer policy, clinical-placement expectations and graduation rules in writing.
Update an Arizona nursing account, name or address
Use the existing account
Renewal, application status, deficiency notices and profile changes are connected to the original Nurse Portal profile.
Legal name change
Open Manage Profile, select Demographics and upload one document showing the former name and one showing the current name.
Residential or mailing address
Update both addresses in Demographics and correctly select the primary state of residence.
Report changes within 30 days
A failure-to-report-address-change fee of $25 can apply.
No hard-copy license
Arizona stopped issuing paper licenses and certificates in 2018. Use the applicable live verification system.
Unexpected payment request
Confirm any threat, payment or document request through the official portal or Board phone before responding.
Arizona State Board of Nursing phone and address
Before contacting the Board, prepare the license or application number, credential type, deficiency wording, submission date and the name of the organization that sent the missing record.
