Most visitors are not looking for a directory of government links. They need to know whether a nurse is active today, why an application says Pending or Closed, what must be completed before renewal and whether a Washington credential is single-state or multistate.
Washington now uses the HELMS portal for applications, renewals, reactivation, account changes and multistate upgrades. Public verification remains available through the Department of Health Provider Credential Search, while Nursys is especially useful for RN and LPN compact status.
Washington RN, LPN and ARNP credentials renew every year by the nurse’s birthday. Online renewal normally becomes available about 85–90 days before expiration.

2026 health-equity deadline: licensed Washington RNs and LPNs must complete two hours of health-equity CE by their 2026 renewal date. Those two hours count within the required eight annual CE hours.
The old portals are retired

Washington nursing credentials renew annually on the licensee’s birthday. HELMS normally makes renewal available approximately 85–90 days before expiration and sends an email reminder when a current email is on file.

In HELMS choose Payments, History and Download Receipt. Then confirm the updated expiration in Provider Credential Search.
No automatic grace period: practise only while the credential shows active authority. Starting a renewal without completing payment and submission does not extend the license.
RN and LPN credentials can generally be renewed late for up to one year after expiration. ARNP credentials can generally be renewed late for up to two years. Longer-expired credentials require reactivation.

Reactivation only brings the credential current to the reactivation date. When the next birthday follows shortly afterward, another annual renewal fee may become due immediately.

Continuing education and practice requirements must be completed during the applicable annual renewal period. Unused hours do not carry forward into the next cycle.

All already licensed Washington RNs and LPNs have until their 2026 renewal date to complete the first required two hours of health-equity CE. After that renewal, two health-equity hours are required every annual renewal period.
Health equity counts inside eight
The two health-equity hours are part of—not additional to—the RN or LPN eight-hour annual CE total.
Practice hours are annual
RNs and LPNs must complete at least 96 active-practice hours during each annual renewal period.
No carryover
CE and practice hours must belong to the current renewal period and cannot be transferred into the next year.

Each advanced-practice designation must maintain active national certification, with recertification supplied to WABON.

A Closed application means WABON did not receive the information needed to process it. The applicant may need to request and submit a new paper application rather than trying to reopen the closed online file.

Washington RN or LPN licensure by endorsement
Endorsement applicants can choose a Washington single-state license or, when Washington is the primary state of residence and all compact requirements are met, a Washington multistate license.
Single-state endorsement
Allows practice in Washington. Applicants need an active license elsewhere—or an expired U.S. license plus active Canadian license—and must meet education, NCLEX and verification requirements.
Multistate endorsement
Requires Washington primary-state residency, valid U.S. Social Security number, FBI fingerprints and all Uniform Multistate License Requirements.

Washington participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact for RN and LPN licenses. The compact does not apply to ARNP licenses.

An active Washington RN or LPN must submit a separate multistate upgrade application.

ARNP remains state-specific
A compact RN license can support an ARNP license, but it does not replace Washington ARNP authority.
A multistate upgrade and annual renewal are separate transactions. When renewal is due in the same month as the upgrade, complete and pay both.
