Alaska stopped requiring separate license-verification requests and fees for ordinary public primary-source verification in November 2022.
One competency method is not enough
Most renewing RNs and LPNs must complete two methods from continuing education, uncompensated professional activity and nursing employment.
There is no practice grace period
Renewal must be complete on or before the applicable expiration date to continue practising in Alaska.
Renewal notice is sent ahead
The Board states that renewal notices are provided at least 60 days before expiration, but the nurse remains responsible even if a notice is missed.
Alaska is not in the compact

Use the license number when available
A complete Alaska number is more reliable than a name-only search. For names, use the current legal surname and try a former surname if necessary.

Confirm registered nurse, practical nurse, advanced practice registered nurse or the relevant nursing-assistant credential.
Read status, expiration and discipline
Do not treat a matching name as sufficient. Check whether the credential is current, lapsed, retired, restricted or subject to a disciplinary document.
Document the verification
Employers should record the source, license number, profession, status, expiration and date checked.

Alaska LPN, RN and APRN renewal deadlines
Alaska nursing credentials renew on a statewide biennial schedule, but LPNs expire two months before RNs and APRNs. New licenses issued within 90 days of expiration are generally issued into the next biennium.

Failure to receive a renewal email does not extend the deadline. Alaska requires licensees to keep current contact information on file and monitor their own expiration date.

Why the renewal option may not appear
There is no grace period to practise on a lapsed Alaska nursing license. A late-renewal penalty may apply, but paying a penalty does not authorize work before renewal is issued.
Alaska continuing-competency requirements explained
Before RN or LPN renewal, choose any two qualifying methods below. You do not need all three, but completing only one method normally does not satisfy the rule.

CPR and BLS do not count
Alaska states that contact or in-service hours for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic life support are not accepted toward the CE method.
Some first renewals are exempt
An LPN initially licensed on or after October 1 of an odd year, or an RN initially licensed on or after December 1 of an odd year, does not need competency proof for that first renewal.
Random audit response is time-limited
A nurse selected for mandatory audit is notified in writing and given 30 days to submit proof for the completed licensing period.
Do not upload random certificates simply to reach 30 hours. Confirm that the provider and course type meet Alaska’s acceptance rules and that the activity occurred in the correct licensing period.

Application and renewal fees are generally non-refundable. Confirm the correct license type and transaction before paying.
A nurse initially licensed within 12 months of expiration pays the full initial fee, then may receive a first-renewal fee prorated to half the current license fee.

Temporary permits
Alaska’s current fee regulation lists a $0 temporary-permit fee. A permit is not automatic and may be issued only when the applicant meets the applicable requirements.
Employer expedited review
A facility executive may request expedited review only when licensing delay would result in a facility shutdown or termination of service.
Do not pay for a duplicate endorsement application while the first application is under review. Use the existing MY LICENSE file and send missing records to that application.
Alaska APRN renewal, certification and prescriptive authority
Alaska APRNs are licensed independent practitioners in an approved role and population focus. APRN authority is separate from—but dependent on—an active Alaska RN license.
Alaska RN license is required
An APRN application can be filed at the same time as an RN application, and the Board says simultaneous application is preferred.

Renewal requires current national certification for each role and population focus the APRN seeks to renew.
APRN renewal follows the RN calendar

Prescriptive authority has separate requirements
The APRN must maintain the certification and education required for the applicable prescriptive or controlled-substance authority.
DEA holders need opioid-related education
An APRN with a valid DEA registration and controlled-substance authority must attest to at least two hours in pain management and opioid use and addiction during the licensing cycle.
PDMP registration is required where applicable
Controlled-substance prescribers must maintain registration with Alaska’s controlled-substance prescription database.
A renewed RN license does not automatically renew an APRN license or specialty. Check every credential separately in Alaska’s public search.
Alaska is not currently a Nurse Licensure Compact state
The Alaska Board continues to support NLC legislation, but its official page states that the legislature has not yet passed the law needed for Alaska to join.
Multistate license is not Alaska authority
A compact license from Washington, Idaho, Montana or another member jurisdiction does not by itself authorize ordinary Alaska nursing practice.
