California BRN instructs licensees to renew through BreEZe. A standard RN license cannot be renewed earlier than three months before expiration.
No grace period after expiration
A license becomes delinquent after expiration. Do not assume that paying after the deadline automatically authorizes practice.
Active status requires CE
Most RNs need 30 contact hours from a recognized provider during the applicable renewal period.
Fingerprints can block renewal
Active renewal requires DOJ and FBI fingerprint results on file. Nurses fingerprinted before 2014 may need a new submission.

BRN does not license LVNs
California LVN and psychiatric technician licenses are handled by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians.
First-license cycle: the initial California RN license is issued for two birthdays rather than exactly two calendar years. It expires on the last day of the month following the nurse’s birth date; later timely renewals follow a two-year cycle.

California RNs may renew online through BreEZe when the license is within 90 days of expiration. A complete active renewal requires the fee, 30 contact hours of qualifying CE unless exempt, required fingerprints and disclosure answers.

California law can allow work while a timely renewal is pending when the fee was submitted on time and all renewal requirements were met. An employer may impose a stricter rule, so verify workplace policy before continuing to practise.
There is no general renewal grace period after a California RN license expires. Do not rely on an expired or inactive record as authority for ordinary RN practice.
California RN fingerprint requirements
Active renewal requires the BRN to have both California DOJ and FBI fingerprint results. Fingerprints submitted for another employer, board, state or purpose cannot automatically be reused by the BRN.
Both service levels matter
The BRN requires state-level DOJ and federal FBI criminal-history results for active licensure.
Older fingerprints may need replacement
The BRN states that nurses fingerprinted before 2014 must submit a new set to avoid renewal delays.
Do not wait for renewal to open
A nurse who knows new fingerprints are required can begin the request before the 90-day renewal window.

California RN continuing-education rules
An RN renewing to active status generally needs 30 contact hours every two years. The course must relate to nursing practice and come from a provider recognized by the BRN.

What to keep for a possible CE audit
Examples that can qualify
Advanced nursing, pharmacology, advanced life support, patient education, legal nursing issues, nursing management, advanced sciences and relevant specialty courses can qualify.
Common non-qualifying content
Basic CPR/BLS, basic IV or EKG instruction, résumé preparation, investment courses, employee orientation and general self-improvement courses do not qualify.
Completing the same course with identical content and objectives twice during one renewal cycle does not double the contact hours.
California BRN renewal and application fees
BRN payments become earned and are generally non-refundable or non-transferable after receipt. Fingerprinting, Nursys, Pearson VUE and transcript services may charge separately.

California RN licensure by endorsement
To qualify by endorsement, an applicant generally must hold a current active RN license in another state, U.S. territory or Canada, meet California education requirements and have passed the NCLEX-RN or SBTPE.

California is not a Nurse Licensure Compact state. An RN licensed in another compact state still needs California RN authority before practising in California, unless a specific statutory exception applies.
Temporary California RN license
Valid for six months
A temporary RN license can allow practice while the permanent endorsement application is pending.
Apply for endorsement first
A temporary license cannot be requested by itself. Submit the endorsement application before starting the temporary-license request.
Fingerprint results must clear
DOJ and FBI results must be received and processed before a temporary license can issue.

Moving from inactive to active does not create a new expiration date. Another 30 hours may still be required at the next renewal.
An RN who has been lapsed for over eight years and does not hold a current active RN license in another state, U.S. territory or Canada may need to reapply and pass the current NCLEX-RN.

A free public lookup, verification to another nursing board, international verification and an employer confirmation letter are different services.
