Verify a Michigan Nurse—or Finish Renewal Without Missing a Requirement
Most people do not open a licensing page to study regulations. They need to know whether a nurse can work today, why MiPLUS is not showing the expected transaction or whether a transcript, verification or background-check item has reached Michigan.
This guide brings those answers together with the current renewal fee, 25-hour continuing-education rule, pain-management requirement, late-renewal period, endorsement documents, program checks and the correct contact route when a file remains incomplete.
Use the free MiPLUS license search to check public license status. Sign in to MiPLUS to renew, track an application, update your profile, request relicensure or add a specialty certification.

Michigan nursing license facts that affect your next step
Renewal notice: Michigan’s licensing guide says renewal notices are mailed and emailed approximately 90 business days before expiration. The notice is a reminder—not a substitute for keeping your MiPLUS email and address current.
Public verification is free
Use the MiPLUS “Search for a Licensee” function when you only need to confirm a Michigan license and its public status.
Certified verification is different
A certified verification ordered through MiPLUS carries a published $15 processing fee and is normally processed in 3–5 business days.
Keep CE proof for four years
Ordinary renewal does not require attaching certificates unless requested. Retain documentation for at least four years in case of audit.
Daily CE limit applies
Michigan allows no more than 12 continuing-education contact hours to be credited during a single 24-hour period.
CE Broker is optional until audit
A free CE Broker account can help track compliance. A licensee selected for audit must upload documentation through CE Broker.
CNA records use another system
Michigan nurse aides are handled through the state Nurse Aide Registry and MI-NATES—not the professional RN/LPN MiPLUS process.
How to verify a Michigan nursing license
Use the free MiPLUS public search for a current Michigan record. Search by license number when possible, then confirm the profession and complete public record before relying on the result.
Open Michigan’s official license search
Use the MiPLUS public lookup instead of a commercial nursing directory or saved screenshot.
Search a Michigan LicenseEnter the strongest identifying detail
Use the license number when available. Otherwise search the current legal name and consider previous surnames.
Match the correct profession
Confirm whether the result is Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse or a related specialty credential.
Read status and expiration together
Do not rely on the person’s name alone. Match the license number, current status and expiration information.
Check disciplinary information where relevant
Michigan disciplinary records are public. Review the complete public information before making an employment or assignment decision.
Review Disciplinary InformationWhat type of verification do you need?
Open the option closest to your task before paying for a certified record.
| Lookup situation | What to check | Correct next action |
|---|---|---|
| Active/current record | Profession, license number, expiration and disciplinary information. | Record the date and source used for verification. |
| Expired record | Exact expiration date and whether the record is inside or beyond the late-renewal period. | The licensee should sign in to MiPLUS and follow renewal or relicensure instructions. |
| No result | Spelling, former name, license number and correct profession. | Check the application record or contact BPL after confirming the details. |
| Disciplinary information shown | Order, restriction, effective dates and current compliance information. | Read the complete official record rather than relying on a short status label. |
| Out-of-state license only | Whether a separate Michigan license has been issued. | Review Michigan endorsement requirements before practising in Michigan. |

Sign In to MiPLUSOpen the renewal transaction
Review the legal, disciplinary and good-moral-character questions carefully and attach documentation when the system requests it.
Check the specialty box before submitting
If you hold a Michigan nursing specialty certification, keep the specialty selected only when you intend to renew it and your qualifying national certification remains current.
Pay, save confirmation and verify the result
Pay the exact MiPLUS amount, retain the transaction confirmation and recheck the public license record after processing.
Late renewal: Michigan’s guide describes a 60-day period after expiration in which renewal may be completed with the renewal fee and a $20 late fee. Renew promptly and confirm the live license status before working or accepting an assignment.
Why renewal may not look right in MiPLUS
Do not assume a submitted payment means the public license record has already updated. Save the confirmation and verify the live MiPLUS status before relying on the renewal.
Michigan nursing CE requirements explained clearly
RN and LPN renewal generally requires 25 contact hours completed during the previous two-year licensing period. At least 2 of those hours must cover pain and symptom management.
| Requirement | Who needs it | How much | Practical rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| General continuing education | Michigan RNs and LPNs renewing a license. | 25 contact hours during the 2-year cycle. | Use approved providers and retain proof for at least four years. |
| Pain and symptom management | RNs and LPNs. | At least 2 of the 25 contact hours. | The topic must address pain and symptom management rather than general clinical care alone. |
| Implicit-bias training | Health professionals subject to Michigan’s training rule. | 1 hour for each year of the license cycle; normally 2 hours for a two-year renewal. | The training requirement is separate from assuming any generic diversity course qualifies. |
| Human-trafficking training | Michigan nursing licensees. | One-time training before renewal. | Retain documentation showing completion of the approved content. |
| Opioids and controlled-substance awareness | A licensee holding a controlled-substance license where the requirement applies. | One-time training before renewal. | Check the current licensing guide for the accepted content. |
| Daily credit limit | Anyone calculating Michigan nursing CE. | Maximum 12 contact hours in one 24-hour period. | Do not count more than 12 hours from a single day toward the 25-hour total. |
First Michigan renewal
The current guide says a nurse whose initial Michigan RN or LPN license was issued on or after May 8, 2024 must complete continuing education for the first renewal.
Contact hours versus CEUs
One CEU equals 10 contact hours. A 25-contact-hour renewal requirement therefore equals 2.5 CEUs when a provider reports education in CEUs.
CE documentation checklist
CE Broker: Michigan’s Bureau of Professional Licensing offers CE Broker as a tracking option. A free Basic Account is available. If selected for audit, upload the required proof through CE Broker even when a provider has already reported some credits.
Michigan nursing renewal, application and verification fees
Pay the exact amount displayed in MiPLUS. Application, background-check, Nursys or outside evaluation costs can be separate, and published state fees can change.
| Transaction | Published amount | What the user should know |
|---|---|---|
| RN renewal | $131 | Standard two-year Michigan RN renewal fee. |
| LPN renewal | $131 | Standard two-year Michigan LPN renewal fee. |
| RN plus specialty renewal | $161.40 | Combined renewal when the Michigan specialty certification is also maintained. |
| Late fee inside 60-day period | $20 additional | Added to the normal renewal fee when renewal occurs during the late-renewal period. |
| Initial RN or LPN by examination | $212.90 | Michigan application fee; NCLEX registration and other charges can be separate. |
| Initial RN or LPN by endorsement | $212.90 | License verification, fingerprints and evaluation costs can be separate. |
| Certified Michigan verification | $15 | Order through MiPLUS when a certified record is required. |
| Nursys verification | $30 | Michigan’s guide lists $30 per license type for each receiving nursing regulatory body. |
| Specialty certification application | $41.35 or $56.55 | The amount depends on the remaining Michigan RN license period shown in MiPLUS. |
Criminal-background checks, examination registration, credential evaluation, English-proficiency testing and another jurisdiction’s verification fees are not necessarily included in the Michigan application fee.
Check a Michigan nursing application in MiPLUS
MiPLUS allows applicants to apply online, monitor an application and receive electronic notifications. A public license search cannot explain why an unfinished application remains pending.
Sign in to the original MiPLUS account
Use the account created for the nursing application. Recover access instead of starting a duplicate file.
Open MiPLUSOpen the submitted application record
Match the correct RN, LPN, endorsement, examination, relicensure or specialty transaction.
Read all electronic notifications
Application Confirmation and deficiency notices explain fingerprinting and additional-document requirements.
Confirm who must send the document
License verification, transcripts or credential evaluations may need to come directly from the issuing authority or approved service.
Use BPL help only after checking the record
Include the applicant name, MiPLUS record number, profession, submission date and exact missing item.
Open BPL Help| Pending item | What to verify | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Criminal background check | Whether fingerprint instructions were received after the application and completed through the stated process. | Follow the Application Confirmation letter before repeating fingerprints. |
| License verification | Whether every licensing jurisdiction ever held sent verification directly or through Nursys. | Order the missing verification from the appropriate authority. |
| Education record | Whether the school sent the required transcript directly and whether additional evaluation applies. | Ask the school for the sending date and delivery method. |
| Human-trafficking training | Whether the required one-time training was completed and documented. | Retain proof and submit it only through the route requested by BPL. |
| Implicit-bias training | For initial licensure, whether the applicant completed the required 2 hours within the permitted five-year period. | Use training that meets Michigan’s health-professional rule. |
| International evaluation | Whether the approved credential report and English-proficiency evidence were sent directly. | Track the report with the evaluation organization before contacting BPL. |
“I am contacting the Bureau of Professional Licensing about my Michigan _____ application. My MiPLUS record number is _____. I submitted the application on _____. The item named _____ was sent by _____ on _____ through _____. Please confirm whether it has been matched to my application and identify the exact action still required.”
Michigan states that applications are processed in the order received. Repeated submissions can make the file harder to review; verify the correct sender and receipt route before sending another copy.
Michigan RN or LPN licensure by endorsement
Endorsement is for a nurse licensed in another jurisdiction who must obtain Michigan authority. The application requires more than copying an existing license card.
Active unencumbered license
The applicant generally needs an active, unencumbered nursing license in another U.S. jurisdiction and qualifying national examination history.
Verify every license held
Michigan asks for verification of all professional licenses ever held, sent directly by the licensing agency or through an accepted verification service.
Education records
Official transcripts and, in some cases, additional education evaluation are required before the endorsement file can be completed.
Review the current Michigan licensing guide
Confirm the RN or LPN endorsement pathway, examination history and education requirements before paying.
Open Michigan Nursing PageSubmit the endorsement application through MiPLUS
Use the correct profession and transaction. The current initial RN or LPN application fee is $212.90.
Start in MiPLUSComplete the background-check instructions
Michigan sends fingerprint instructions after the application through the Application Confirmation letter.
Order every required license verification
Participating U.S. nursing jurisdictions can often be verified through Nursys. Other authorities must send official verification directly.
Open Nursys VerificationArrange the official transcript or evaluation
The school or approved evaluation service must send the required education record through an accepted route.
Complete Michigan-specific training
Initial applicants must meet the one-time human-trafficking requirement and the current initial implicit-bias requirement.
Direct document route: the current licensing guide allows qualifying licensing agencies to email verification directly to bpldata@michigan.gov or mail it to the Bureau of Professional Licensing, PO Box 30670, Lansing, MI 48909.
Internationally educated applicants can need an approved credentials evaluation and English-language evidence. Do not order an expensive report until you confirm the current Michigan-approved service and report type.
Is Michigan a Nurse Licensure Compact state?
As of this guide’s July 20, 2026 review, Michigan is not listed as an active Nurse Licensure Compact jurisdiction. Michigan compact legislation has been introduced but had not completed enactment and implementation.
Do not assume another compact license is enough
A multistate license issued by another compact home state does not automatically replace the Michigan licensure process while Michigan remains outside active NLC implementation.
Remote nursing can still require Michigan authority
Licensure generally follows where the patient is located. A nurse serving a patient in Michigan should verify the Michigan requirement before providing telehealth or remote nursing services.
Compact legislation can change. Recheck Michigan LARA and the official Nurse Licensure Compact jurisdiction information before moving, accepting a travel assignment or beginning cross-state telehealth work.
Check a Michigan RN or LPN nursing program
Confirm the exact school, campus and program rather than relying on an advertisement. Michigan publishes approved nursing education information and recent examination-performance resources.
Open Michigan’s nursing education page
Use the Board-approved program information provided by LARA.
Open Nursing Education ProgramsChoose the intended license level
Confirm whether the program leads to practical nursing/LPN or registered nursing/RN eligibility.
Match the exact campus and delivery location
A school system can operate multiple campuses or program types with different approval records.
Check state approval and school authorization
A proprietary school offering nursing education should also appear in the appropriate state school-licensing information.
Compare recent NCLEX outcomes
Use the published Michigan program-performance information together with completion, cost and clinical-placement data.
State Board approval and national nursing accreditation are different. Verify both when accreditation affects financial aid, transfer credit, graduate education or a future employer.
Update a Michigan license, add a specialty or request relicensure
MiPLUS uses the “Modification” route for several license changes. Choose the correct option next to the existing license rather than filing an unrelated new application.
Change legal name
Sign in, choose the appropriate Modification option and upload the legal document requested by the system.
Change address or contact details
Keep MiPLUS information current so renewal notices and licensing messages reach the correct email and mailing address.
Add a nursing specialty
Use Modification beside the active RN license and arrange direct national-certification verification.
Relicense an expired record
A license beyond the ordinary late-renewal period may require the MiPLUS relicensure transaction and additional evidence.
Order certified verification
In MiPLUS choose New, License Application, accept the disclaimer and select License Verification.
Read Verification StepsUnexpected payment demand
Michigan LARA warns that it does not request credit-card or sensitive personal information through an unsolicited call, text, email or letter.
Never pay an unexpected “license suspension,” “investigation” or “immediate reinstatement” demand using gift cards, wire transfer or cryptocurrency. End the communication and contact BPL through the official Michigan website.
Michigan CNA verification and renewal are separate
Certified Nurse Aides do not use the RN/LPN professional-license renewal path. Michigan operates a separate Nurse Aide Registry and MI-NATES process.
Verify a nurse aide
Use the Michigan Nurse Aide Registry search rather than the RN/LPN MiPLUS license lookup.
Search Nurse Aide RegistryCNA renewal timing
Michigan’s nurse-aide page states that renewal can begin 45 days before the certificate expiration date.
Work-history requirement
A renewing nurse aide generally needs at least 40 hours of paid nursing or nursing-related work during the previous 24 months.
Effective March 23, 2026, Michigan’s nurse-aide renewal rules include annual continuing-education requirements during the two-year certificate period. Check the current registry page before renewing.
