North Carolina nursing license facts to check first
Missing the deadline has an immediate effect: if renewal is not completed by the last day of the birth month, the North Carolina license is placed on expired status at midnight. The nurse cannot practise on that expired license.

No grace period: when a nurse cannot demonstrate continuing competence, the license is placed on inactive status beginning at 12:01 a.m. on the first day after the renewal date until compliance is achieved.

NCBON instructs licensees not to send continuing-competence evidence unless the Board specifically requests it.

Once per lifetime

A temporary license is not available to an applicant who holds an active multistate license in another compact state. The applicant must also meet North Carolina address and fingerprint requirements.
