Verify a New Jersey Nurse—or Complete the Correct Renewal Route
A public license result, a private application checklist and a multistate nursing privilege are three different records. Using the wrong system can make an active nurse appear missing or leave an application deficiency unresolved.
This guide explains which New Jersey portal to open, what details to prepare, how the 30-hour continuing-education rule works, when Nursys is required and what to send when the Board needs more information.
Use the real-time New Jersey License Verification System to check another nurse. Use MyLicense for your own renewal, application, reinstatement, compact upgrade and uploaded documents.
Verify a nurse
Check the latest individual license status through New Jersey’s real-time system.
Check application status
Review Candidate, APN, compact-upgrade or reinstatement requirements.
Renew RN, LPN or APN
Confirm expiration, complete CE and submit the live online transaction.
Verify a school
Check New Jersey RN, diploma, entry-level MSN and vocational programs.
Apply as a Candidate
New Jersey now combines examination and endorsement into one RN/LPN application.
New Jersey nursing license facts that affect your next step
Do not rely on the dated nursing-renewal landing page that still displays 2015 examples. For a 2026 decision, use the expiration date in the real-time verification record and the amount and deadline displayed inside the live MyLicense renewal transaction.
Exam and endorsement are combined
New Jersey now uses one RN/LPN Candidate application for applicants who have never held a New Jersey nursing license, including nurses licensed in another state.
An NPDB check can add time
The Board must query the National Practitioner Data Bank before issuing or renewing a health-care license. No separate applicant action is normally required.
New Jersey is a compact state
Eligible New Jersey residents can receive or upgrade to a multistate RN or LPN license. A single-state license may be issued when compact requirements are not met.
New graduates should allow school processing
The Board’s current alert asks new graduates not to contact staff until four to six weeks after graduation so the school can submit and staff can review the record.
Use the existing MyLicense account
Do not create another account when a current license, application or uploaded document is already attached to an existing profile.
Nurse aides use another system
Certified Nurse Aide and homemaker-home health aide records are not the same as an RN or LPN Board of Nursing license.

How to verify a New Jersey nursing license
The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs describes its verification portal as a real-time system containing the most current professional-license information.
Open the real-time verification portal
The landing page offers Business Search and Person Search. Nursing-license lookups normally use Person Search.
Open Real-Time VerificationSelect the nursing credential
Choose the relevant individual license type instead of searching every New Jersey profession.
Use the license number when available
If the number is unknown, search the nurse’s current legal name and consider a former surname.
Match the exact person and credential
Confirm the nurse’s name, RN or LPN license type, license number, status and expiration date.
Check compact authority separately
A single-state New Jersey license and a multistate NLC license are not interchangeable. Use Nursys for compact privilege.
| Situation | What it means | Correct action |
|---|---|---|
| Current active NJ license | The displayed New Jersey credential is active under the public record shown. | Confirm license type, expiration and any public disciplinary information. |
| Single-state license | The license authorizes practice in New Jersey but does not provide NLC practice authority in other compact states. | Review multistate Upgrade eligibility if New Jersey is the primary state of residence. |
| Multistate license | The home-state license includes practice authority in other compact states. | Confirm current compact status through Nursys. |
| Inactive | The license is not active for ordinary New Jersey nursing practice. | Use reactivation before returning to active practice. |
| Lapsed or suspended | The license was not maintained through the required renewal process or another restriction applies. | Do not practise on that record; review reinstatement and any public orders. |
| No New Jersey result | The nurse may be listed under another name, may hold another credential or may be practising under another compact state’s license. | Recheck the search and use Nursys when compact practice may apply. |
Employers are responsible for confirming that a nurse holds current authority before and during employment. Record the verification date instead of retaining only an undated screenshot.
Renew a New Jersey RN, LPN or APN credential
New Jersey nursing credentials renew on a biennial cycle. Because an old public renewal page still displays outdated examples, use the real-time expiration date and the current MyLicense renewal transaction as the controlling practical information.
Verify expiration
Open the live public record and write down the exact expiration date.
Complete CE
Finish 30 contact hours, including the required opioid topic.
Open MyLicense
Use the existing account connected to the nursing credential.
Submit and recheck
Save the receipt and verify the public status after processing.
Check the live expiration date
Do not estimate the deadline from an old license card or renewal article.
Verify License and ExpirationComplete the preceding biennial CE requirement
Most active RNs and LPNs need 30 contact hours during the two-year period before renewal.
Review Official CE FAQSign in to the existing MyLicense account
Do not create a duplicate profile when the current license or application already appears under another login.
Open MyLicenseOpen the current renewal transaction
Review your legal name, addresses, email, disclosure questions, license status and any linked APN or forensic credential.
Use the amount displayed by MyLicense
Current fees and any late or related credential amounts should be taken from the live transaction, not the dated 2015 renewal page.
Save confirmation and monitor status
The required NPDB query can add several days even after other renewal requirements are satisfied. Recheck the real-time public record.
Do not continue practising when the real-time record does not show current legal authority. A payment receipt alone is not a substitute for an active license or compact privilege.
Questions specifically concerning RN/LPN renewal, reinstatement or multistate upgrades can be sent to NursingRRU@dca.njoag.gov.
New Jersey nursing CE requirements explained
Each active nursing licensee generally completes at least 30 contact hours during the two-year period immediately preceding renewal. One contact hour equals 60 minutes of instruction.
| Requirement | Who it affects | Practical rule |
|---|---|---|
| 30 contact hours | Active RNs, LPNs and related nursing credentials subject to renewal requirements. | Complete the hours during the preceding biennial period. |
| One opioid-related hour | Registered professional nurses and licensed practical nurses. | The topic must address prescription opioids, alternatives, risks and signs of abuse, addiction or diversion. |
| Online education | Licensees using distance-learning courses. | Online courses are allowed when they otherwise meet approved-provider and subject requirements. |
| Carryover | A licensee completing more than the required hours. | Up to 15 additional contact hours may be carried into the next renewal period. |
| Inactive status | A nurse who is not maintaining an active practice license. | CE is not required while inactive, but compliance is needed to reactivate. |
| APN national certification | Advanced Practice Nurses. | Maintain the RN CE requirement and the continuing requirements of the national certifying agency. |
| APN end-of-life education | Advanced Practice Nurses. | Two credits each biennial period must concern end-of-life care. |
Nursing-related courses should be offered or approved through a qualifying credentialing organization. Keep certificates and supporting records because the Board can request proof during an audit.
Check a New Jersey nursing application
The Board’s current applications page provides a dedicated status email and links to the online Candidate, compact-upgrade, reinstatement and APN applications.
Open the existing MyLicense profile
Use the account under which the Candidate, APN, reinstatement or upgrade application was submitted.
Sign In to MyLicenseOpen the exact application
Do not confuse a Candidate application with APN certification, compact Upgrade or reinstatement.
Read every incomplete requirement
Common items can include education, license verification, fingerprints, identity documents, examination results, credentials evaluation or Board review.
Confirm who must send each item
A nursing school, licensing authority, Nursys, CGFNS or national certifying body may need to send the document directly.
Allow the NPDB query to complete
The Board states that this check may take several days after other licensure requirements are fulfilled.
Send a precise status request
Include the application type, full name, application number, item name, sender and delivery date.
Email NursingUpdatesNew graduate timing: the Board’s current alert asks graduates to allow four to six weeks after graduation before contacting the Board, giving the school time to submit information and staff time to review it.
“My name is _____. My application type is _____ and my application number is _____. The item named _____ was sent by _____ on _____ through _____. My online checklist currently shows _____. Please confirm whether the item has been matched and identify the exact remaining requirement.”
New Jersey Candidate application: exam and endorsement combined
New Jersey no longer uses separate ordinary examination and endorsement applications for first-time New Jersey RN and LPN applicants. Both routes now begin with the Candidate application.
Open the current Applications and Forms page
Read the Candidate instructions before creating or paying for the transaction.
Open Nursing ApplicationsChoose RN or LPN Candidate
Complete the profession-specific education and examination sections accurately.
Complete fingerprint instructions
Follow the New Jersey or out-of-state fingerprint route supplied for the application. Do not send an unrequested fingerprint card.
Arrange official third-party records
Education, state licensure verification, national examination results and international credentials can require direct submission.
Monitor compact eligibility
A multistate license will be issued when all New Jersey and NLC requirements are met. Otherwise, a qualifying applicant may receive a single-state license.
An applicant who fails three consecutive licensing examinations must provide proof of completing an approved 30-hour remediation course before taking a fourth examination.
New Jersey multistate license eligibility
New Jersey is a Nurse Licensure Compact member. An active single-state New Jersey RN or LPN license does not automatically become multistate; current licensees must apply for an Upgrade.
| Your situation | Correct route | Key point |
|---|---|---|
| New Jersey resident applying for first RN/LPN license | Candidate application | The Board assesses multistate eligibility during the application. |
| Active NJ single-state license | Multistate Upgrade application | The license does not convert automatically. |
| Primary residence is another compact state | Home-state multistate license | New Jersey ordinarily acts as a remote compact state. |
| No valid Social Security number | Single-state consideration | A valid SSN is required for multistate eligibility but not necessarily for single-state RN/LPN or APN licensure. |
| Need to verify an out-of-state multistate privilege | Nursys | The report includes compact status, expiration and discipline information. |
The Nurse Licensure Compact covers RN and LPN/VN practice. It does not independently grant New Jersey APN certification.
New Jersey APN certification requirements and renewal link
New Jersey Board certification is required to practise or represent yourself as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the state. The Board currently certifies qualifying nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists and master’s-prepared certified registered nurse anesthetists.
Underlying RN authority
An APN applicant must hold qualifying RN authority. A multistate RN license from another home state can support a New Jersey APN application.
Graduate education
Official graduate and post-master’s transcripts must be sent directly from the college or university.
National examination
Certification or examination information must be sent directly from the national certifying organization.
Pharmacology education
The education record must include the qualifying graduate pharmacology course or integrated pharmacology hours.
Published application cost
The current APN page lists a $100 non-refundable application fee and an additional $80 or $160 certificate fee depending on the RN expiration cycle.
APN continuing education
Maintain RN CE, national certification requirements and the required end-of-life topic hours.
APN reinstatement begins with the RN license. Restore the New Jersey RN license before applying to reinstate or reactivate APN certification.
Which New Jersey nursing fees can be confirmed before payment?
The Board’s current 2026 applications page does not display every RN/LPN transaction fee in its public text. Use the live MyLicense amount when the official public page does not publish a current figure.
| Transaction | Publicly confirmed information | What to do before paying |
|---|---|---|
| RN/LPN Candidate application | Submitted online through the current Candidate application. | Use the exact non-refundable amount displayed by MyLicense. |
| RN/LPN renewal | Renewed online on a biennial basis. | Use the live renewal amount; do not rely on the dated 2015 example page. |
| Multistate Upgrade | Separate online application for eligible current New Jersey licensees. | Confirm residency and all compact eligibility before submitting the displayed fee. |
| APN application | $100 non-refundable application fee. | Also prepare the separate certificate fee. |
| APN certificate | $80 or $160 depending on the RN license-expiration cycle. | Follow the invoice and instruction issued for the application. |
| Fingerprint background check | Required for Candidate and multistate eligibility routes. | Use only the vendor and service code supplied by the official application instructions. |
| Nursys verification | Used for interstate license verification and compact information. | Choose the correct QuickConfirm or endorsement-verification service. |
Do not send a check, money order or online payment based on an unofficial nursing-license website. Confirm the amount and payee in the current Board instructions or live MyLicense transaction.
Verify a New Jersey nursing program
The Board’s program page separates baccalaureate, associate, diploma, entry-level master’s and vocational nursing programs and also provides RN and PN NCLEX reports.
Open Nursing Program Information
Use the Board’s current list instead of relying on a recruiter or school advertisement.
Open Official Program PageChoose the correct program category
Select baccalaureate, associate, diploma, entry-level MSN or vocational nursing.
Match the exact school and location
Do not assume that every campus or nursing pathway operated by the same institution has the same record.
Review RN or PN NCLEX reports
Compare available performance information before paying tuition or accepting a non-refundable seat.
Check accreditation separately
Board approval and national nursing accreditation are different checks with different effects on transfer, employment and graduate study.
